Ukraine Support Pledge
Ways to Help Ukraine, Art competitions & Opportunities, Women Artists Prize, £2,000 commissions
Hi everyone. Some words I needed to hear on whether it’s frivolous to focus on art in these times from #artistsupportpledge founder Matthew Burrows :
“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one” - Stella Adler
Burrows continues: “With the unsettling news of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, making art can seem futile and unnecessary. But as Stella Adler reminds us, it is when life is most cruel that we need to explore our greatest depths. In art, we find a complete picture of who and what we are. Oppression and conflict of any kind can only be defeated by knowing ourselves and imaginatively developing empathy and compassion for the plight of others. So keep painting, making, sculpting, sewing, printing, drawing, and photographing, for in war it is our souls that are most fragile, both as aggressors and defenders.”
Ukraine Support Pledge
Burrows and artist curator Zavier Ellis have just launched Ukraine Support Pledge. Post your artwork on Instagram tagged #ukrainesupportpledge to sell for a suggested donation of £200 ($200, €200) to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund.
Ways to Help
The Kyiv Independent recently highlighted local charities across Ukraine. This Reddit post groups the charities mentioned by subject.
The UK Government will match your donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal up to £20 million. The DEC is made up of 15 member charities who are experts in humanitarian aid and specialise in different areas of disaster response.
Support artists on Etsy
A smart way of sending money directly to Ukranian based artists is to use this Etsy pdf search to purchase digital art files from embroidery patterns to prints.
The digital products are sent automatically via e-mail so the seller doesn’t have to post anything & receives funds immediately to help where it’s most needed.
Buy art from Ukranian artists on Saatchi Art and Artfinder.
