Summer Exhibition
Royal Academy deadline nears, Turkey/Syria support, Peter Doig exhibition, Photography awards
Hi! With just under a week left to enter the international Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2023, here’s a quick roundup of facts for fellow last minute entrants.
The theme is ‘Only Connect’, which can be “as simple or as complex as you like,” co-ordinator David Remfry says, “as simple as putting a plug into a socket, as meeting a friend for a coffee or the fabric of the entire cosmos”.
The numbers: £50,000+ prize fund. £38 entry fee (allows 1 or 2 entries). 16,500 entry slots. 4,000 entries will be delivered to the Academy for the final round of selection. Almost 1,500 were selected for the 2022 exhibition.
Watch the BBC’s behind the scenes show with Joe Lycett for last year’s exhibition.
This year’s committee is led by British painter, David Remfry and includes, Peter Barber, Eileen Cooper, Bill Jacklin, Katherine Jones, Tim Shaw and Clare Woods.

Peter Doig Exhibition
New work from Peter Doig at The Courtauld Gallery, London (10 Feb - 29 May 2023). Enjoyed this accompanying interview in The Art Newspaper.
Finally got round to watching Summer of Soul (Mark Kermode’s 5 star review ‘The Best Concert Film Ever Made?’ put it on my radar) and oh boy, was it worth the wait. Questlove’s debut film is a sonic/visual triumph of culture, creativity and community. See a young Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone and many others perform at the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize & Audience Award at Sundance for good reason. 10/10 (Stream in UK, US)
