£7k RI Oil Painters Annual Show, Art Residencies, Kids Football Competition, Barbie & Inspiration
Hi! What does ‘H’ from Steps and retired footballer Tony Adams have in common? They’re both keen art collectors and two of six prominent figures from different areas of the art world selecting work for the 25th ING Discerning Eye Exhibition.
Two artists (Chris Levine & Julian Wild), two critics (Eliza Gluckman & Péjú Oshin) and two collectors (Ian “H” Watkins & Tony Adams) will select their own mini-exhibitions from publicly submitted works alongside independently selected artists.
The £14,000 prize fund includes the ING Purchase Prize of £5,000. Open to UK based artists working in 2D & 3D (max size 50cm), £15 entry, Mall Galleries, London show in November. See Making A Mark’s post on the 2022 show & winners. (closes 31 Aug)
Had no idea ‘H’ was a long time painter (currently showing at the Adamo Gallery).

Speaking of Andy Goldsworthy - ‘Split Oak Wood’ is a recent work of ‘windfallen oak branches. Stacked between two fallen trunks of what had once been a single tree. Oak trees, grown from acorns collected nearby will be planted below the tree so that as the stack and tree decay, new oaks will grow’.

On Inspiration
I first encountered Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach at the UK premiere of ‘Frances Ha’ with an audience Q&A at the Edinburgh Film Festival. What stuck with me was just how much they both LOVED cinema. Ten years on it’s inspiring to see how that love continues to fuel their creativity. The 15 minute video above shows Gerwig zip through 33 films that influenced the Barbie movie from set design and lighting to plot and film techniques. It’s a lovely illustration of the magpie approach to creation: 1. Collect shiny things. 2. Put them through a creative spin cycle. 3. Rearrange to taste.

Neal Bascomb at Work/Craft/Life on Moses Onyango’s incredible creations.
Home of the Jungfrau Marathon - ‘the most beautiful marathon the world’ which I consider entering every year then don’t when I remember what mountains are. Entering to win a weekend for two via a 2 minute survey on the Grindelwald website seems like a good compromise this year.
See you next week,
