“Rancher” by Otis Kwame Quaicoe (2021)
Otis Kwame Quaicoe
Otis studied painting at Ghanatta College of Art in Accra, Ghana before moving to Portland, Oregon in 2017. His first US show came in 2019 - Black Like Me reflected Otis’s experience moving to the US - “Once you get here, you are Black,” he says. “No one says, ‘oh, look at that African,’ because nobody knows that I’m Ghanian, all they see is my black skin.” His arrival in the US led him to create a show that spoke to the shared experience of Africans and African Americans.
“It always goes back to the Old Masters, we see the paintings and all these people are very powerful people. There were a lot of black people who were also powerful but I never see paintings of them. For me as an artist in this era I feel it’s a way of correcting that, it’s my way of sort of rewriting history.”
Otis latest show runs from Nov 29, 2021 – Oct 2022 at the Rubell Museum, Miami.

Why has David Shrigley filled a Mayfair gallery with tennis balls. Tim Jonze from the Guardian finds out. Liked this from the comments: “I remember a stall he set up at Banksy’s Dismaland… you had three goes at knocking over an anvil… with a ping pong ball… you got a red rubber wrist band with meaningless wrist band written on it as reward for your inevitable failure. Made me smile.”
First snowflakes of Winter…
See you next week,
Grant
