£25k RSA Blackadder Awards, €50k Craft Prize, iPhone Photo Awards
Hi folks, excuse the Scottish focus of this week’s headline prizes but they come from a dearly departed Edinburgh based artist overdue some limelight.
The Royal Scottish Academy has received a bequest of over £7 million from the estate of the Scottish painter & printmaker Dame Elizabeth Blackadder (1931-2021). The RSA Blackadder Houston Bequest will initiate a wide series of opportunities including new prizes, bursaries and travel awards for graduates and mid-career artists based or born in Scotland. Here’s two for starters…
RSA Blackadder Houston Mid-Career Painting Award - £20,000 to enable a painter to devote themselves exclusively to painting for up to 6 months, which they would otherwise not be able to do, Scottish born or based painters with more than 15 years since graduating art school or 15 years substantive practice, free entry (1 Oct)
RSA Blackadder Houston Mid-Career Travel Award - £5,000 towards travel to create a new body of work, Scottish born or based painters with more than 15 years since graduating art school or 15 years substantive practice, free entry (1 Oct)

Artist Residencies
Artist Residency at 500 Capp Street, SanFrancisco - $10,000 travel stipend & up to $10,000 production budget. Open call to international, national and local artists. Five month residency begins Fall of 2023 ending Spring 2024. The focus of this year’s program is to create work highlighting experimentation that expands the boundaries of genre, medium and material. European Media Art Platform Residencies - €4,000 grant inc. subsistence costs, grant of €2,000 for collaborating artist(s), project budget of €4,000, travel expenses up to €1,000, accommodation inc. EU based artists, or collectives can apply with a project proposal for a residency of two months in 2024. The artists will be collaborating with a person of their choice or a person local to the host institution. (12 Sep)
